David Martin has been with the KU School of Nursing since 1991. He is a clinical associate professor and director of the RN-BSN program.

Martin teaches the Self & System Leadership core courses in the pre-licensure and the RN-BSN program. He has been instrumental in implementing the new concept-based core curriculum and for using team-based learning activities in an active learning classroom.

As program director for the RN-BSN program, Martin works with a core group of faculty to oversee all aspects of the program, including curriculum design and development, faculty selection and orientation, marketing to area schools of nursing, and evaluation.

He has been an active researcher and presenter at local, regional and national eventsm having completed projects on "Preceptor Development", Moral Distress in Undergraduate Nursing Students", "Microsystems Analysis in Acute Care Environments", "Communities of Inquiry within Team Based Learning", and "What Magnet Hospitals can expect from Today's Baccalaureate Generalist Nurse".

He was a member of the Kansas State Board of Nursing Education Committee from 2010 to 2014 and a member of the Kansas State Board of Nursing Practice Committee from 2006-2010.  Within the University of Kansas Medical Center he has held leadership roles in the Informatics Committee, Faculty Steering Committee, and the Human Subjects Committee.  At the School of Nursing he actively participates in governance activities, including serving as Faculty Assembly chair from 2003-2006.

Martin has been actively involved in an initiative to provide health care assistance to the country of Kyrgyzstan in the former Soviet Union. The project, which is one aspect of the partnership between KU Medical Center and Kyrgyzstan, is designed to upgrade the role of nurses in the Kyrgyzstan health system. Since 1994, Martin and other faculty and staff at the KU Medical Center have served as consultants and teachers to Kyrgyzstan healthcare providers. He was instrumental in developing and teaching intensive courses for Kyrgyzstan nurses that focused on nursing administration and education. In 1997, he had the opportunity to witness the tangible results of these courses during a follow-up visit to Kyrgyzstan.

Further, Martin is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International. From 2006-2008 he served as chapter president, during which time the chapter was awarded two distinguished merits and a chapter key. Prior to coming to the School of Nursing, Martin was a Critical Care staff nurse, director of Hospital Education, nurse manager, nursing director, and a senior staff specialist with the American Nurses Association.

Prior to his joining the faculty, Martin held several staff and administrative nursing positions in various acute care facilities and is a former senior staff specialist with the American Nurses' Association.
