David Martin, who has been with the KU School of Nursing since 1991, introduces students to many contemporary nursing issues such as that of management and role transition of healthcare law and ethics in nursing. As coordinator of the school's professional practicum program, Martin has worked to secure 120 clinical sites and preceptors for baccalaureate nursing students in a variety of acute care and community-based settings. This program was recognized in 2000 as a Best Practice Model by the Greater Kansas City Health Council, Colleagues in Caring Initiative.

Since 1999, Martin has also been involved in teaching web-based courses for RNs returning to school for their baccalaureate degree. One of his courses, Legal/Ethical Foundations of Professional Nursing, received honorable mention in 2000 in the E-Learning Design Laboratory at the KU Center for Research on Learning as an outstanding contribution to learning using online technology. Since 1994, Martin has been actively involved in an initiative to provide healthcare assistance to the newly independent state of Kyrgystan in the former Soviet Union. The project, which is one aspect of the partnership between KU and Kyrgystan, upgraded the role of nurses in the Kyrgystan health system. Martin and other faculty and staff at the KU Medical Center have served as consultants and teachers to Kyrgystan healthcare providers. He was instrumental in developing and teaching intensive courses for Kyrgystan nurses that focused on nursing administration and education. In 1997, he had the opportunity to witness the tangible results of these courses during a follow up visit to Kyrgystan.

Prior to his joining the faculty, Martin held several staff and administrative nursing positions in various acute care facilities and is a former senior staff specialist with the American Nurses' Association. He is also an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International.
