An associate professor in the KU School of Nursing, Edna K. Hamera has expanded her traditional teaching role to include several web-based graduate courses including psychiatric assessment for advanced nursing practice as well as psychiatric mental health nursing/short-term illness. In addition she practices at an indigent clinic and mental health center as an advanced practice nurse.

In her research role, Hamera is collaborating with colleagues in the KU School of Health Professions to address independent living skill training in individuals with schizophrenia. Skill training has focused on helping these individuals successfully negotiate grocery stores and other complex environments and more recently on weight loss.
