Preceptor-Preceptee-Faculty Responsibilities

N490 PROFESSIONAL PRACTICUM

The preceptor agrees to assume the following responsibilities for the duration of the course, Professional Practicum:

  1. Assist the learner (preceptee) in recognizing and enhancing strengths in clinical competence, knowledge base, and organizational skills.
  2. Assist the learner in recognizing areas that need improvement and help discover ways to overcome these.  Assist the learner to meet objectives of the course.
  3. Provide the opportunity and information to the learner that allows that person to function in a professional manner.  (Examples would include rules and regulations of the organization, agency, or unit; lines of communication and authority; standards of nursing practice)
  4. Serve as a role model to foster professional behaviors.
  5. Facilitate requests of the learner for special experiences, classes, etc., that increase their performance/knowledge.
  6. Offer ongoing feedback and evaluation to preceptee and faculty member regarding changes in performance.
  7. Encourage the student to suggest methods of improving patient care in a variety of ways (e.g., patient/family teaching, need for referral, clinical practice objectives, and recognition of hazards to patient safety).
  8. Support the learner's attempts to identify potential areas of change and assist in implementing change as necessary, desirable, and feasible.
  9. Participate in regular conferences with the student and faculty member in order to provide feedback regarding learner's performance.

The responsibilities of the learner (preceptee) shall be as follows:

  1. Be knowledgeable of the policies and objectives of the agencies and/or areas where assigned.
  2. Identify early and on an ongoing basis one's own learning needs and work independently, with the preceptor, and with the clinical instructor to meet these needs.
  3. Conduct self at all times consistent with established codes of conduct of the profession.
  4. Be knowledgeable of the lines of authority within the agency, use these established channels, and constructively analyze organizational structure and function.
  5. Be knowledgeable of the course objectives and strive to meet the clinical practice objectives with the aid of the preceptor and instructor.
  6. Communicate to the instructor on a regular basis one's own progress in the experience, discussion of specific cases, and additional student learning needs.

Faculty responsibilities: Over-all responsibility for student learning in the clinical portion of the course resides with the faculty.  Toward this end, the faculty will:

  • Communicate the objectives of the course to the preceptor and learner.
  • Assess and communicate the over-all learning needs of the student to the preceptor.
  • Recommend types of experiences students may need in order to achieve the objectives of the course.
  • Conduct clinical conferences on a regular basis with the group of students.
  • Schedule periodic planning and evaluation conferences with preceptor and learner.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate the preceptor and preceptee experience.
  • Act as a consultant to the preceptor and learner.
