Melinda Krautmann, RN, MS, BSN, has provided professional nursing services to all age groups in multiple clinical settings: direct patient care, in advocacy for patients and families, and in patient education.

Following her undergraduate study, Krautmann served as a visiting nurse in Rota, Spain, where she provided childbirth, infant care and breastfeeding classes, a breastfeeding support group, and home visits to new mothers and infants. Upon returning to the U.S., Krautmann was a staff nurse at hospitals, outpatient clinics, and with the American Red Cross.

After earning her Masters in Health Education, she provided bilingual diabetes education (English/ Spanish) at Scott & White Clinic in College Station, Texas, became program manager for an outpatient rehabilitation center, and then director of nurses for a community-based family practice residency program.

Krautmann came to Kansas in 2002 as a care coordinator at the assessment center of Saint Luke's South in Overland Park, Kan. Krautmann's private business, Options for Health, L.L.C., provides advocacy, health coaching, chronic disease self-management education, with a focus on diabetes and tobacco cessation.

As outreach coordinator for the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, Krautmann improved access to primary health care, enhanced health maintenance, and coordinated the development of community health resources for people with diabetes in Wyandotte County. She recruited and mentored 16 Faith Community Nurses and Lay Health Advisors in diabetes prevention and early intervention initiatives in Wyandotte County. Krautmann also provided clinical education to KU undergraduate nursing students in populations health.

Currently Krautmann obtains funding and implements a bilingual (English and Spanish) Healthy Community program at Bethel Neighborhood Center in Kansas City, Kan., providing nutrition education, health promotion, and Tai Chi exercise classes. She also provides case management for smoking cessation research at Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

Krautmann is active with state and local initiatives to improve health care for people with diabetes. She also serves on the Nutrition Committee for the Latino Health for All Coalition of Kansas City, Kan.
