Barnes is associate dean for student affairs and a research assistant professor at the KU School of Nursing. In her role as associate dean, she collaborates as an executive team member with other associate deans in the School of Nursing in strategic planning, policy development, annual budgeting and fiscal monitoring, developing and implementing program initiatives, reviewing and revising admission requirements and evaluating quality for all missions of the school.

Prior to her position at the KU School of Nursing, Barnes, who has a Ph.D. in Adult, Continuing, and Occupational Education, was an instructor of strategy and operations management at the Kansas State University School of Business. Her career background includes 20 years of higher education administration, including program and curriculum development, instruction, student affairs, and enrollment management; as well as corporate experiences in marketing research, inter-organizational learning and development, and Lean (resource efficiency)/Six Sigma (quality improvement).

Stemming from this breadth of education and corporate experience, and approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, Dr. Barnes' research efforts are focused on quality and continuous improvement in learning experiences and organizational performance through competencies encompassing constituent insights, professional development, team learning, and inter-organizational transfer of learning. She created the Motivational Conditions in Learning InstrumentTM used in quantifying learner perceptions of conditions eliciting intrinsic motivation to learn in both classroom and out-of-classroom team-based learning environments.
