Vicki L. Hicks, RN, MS, APRN, is a clinical associate professor and advanced practice Registered Nurse-Clinical Nurse Specialist in the state of Kansas. She joined the faculty at the KU School of Nursing in 1992 and has taught population based clinical courses for RN-BSN, BSN and master's students.Hicks developed and taught elective courses on international health care and led students on trips to the Dominican Republic, China, Malawi, and Africa, as well as local trips to the Pottawatomi Indian National. She joined faculty delegations to Uganda and India to explore clinical course settings and integrated global health experiences into the senior practicum course and population based cilnical course.
Hicks was awarded the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching and Jayhawer RN Clinical Teaching Award.
She participated with the KU undergraduate faculty as they designed and implemented a concept based curriculum in 2011. She was instrumental in planning and developing the population- based practicum course and facilitated collaboration and engagement of community health partners and stakeholders with the population based curriculum.
Hicks continues to maintain a faculty practice role since 1994 as a Bloodeborne Pathogen Consultant for employees at Johnson County Community College.
Research activities include participation as a Faculty Fellow with a Faculty Development Grant for Preventing Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse through the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Her focus with the grant was adolescent substance abuse prevention and incorporating community prevention efforts into student clinical experiences.
Community outreach prevention activities include the local faith community and providing a web-based certification for prevention specialists. She has presented at local, national, and international events on topics of "Concept Based Curricular Change for Population Based Clinical Courses", "Inter-professional On-line Learning-Population Based Healthcare for Occupational Therapists and Nurses", "Faculty Mentor Program", "Trans-Cultural Clinical Experiences: Impact on Curricular Development of BSN Students", "Challenges of Development a Global Health Perspective in Nursing Education", "On-Site Care Coordination for Pre-School Urban Disadvantaged Children", "Prevention of Adolescent Substance Abuse".
She is a member of Association of Community Health Nurse Educators, Trans-Cultural Nursing Society, Kansas Public Health Association, and Sigma Theta Tau. Prior to her role at KU School of Nursing, she has worked as an Interim Case Manager for Worker's Compensation, Occupational Health Nurse at AT&T and Hallmark Cards, Inc., staff nurse at Children's Mercy Hospital and School Nurse at St. Ann School, Prairie Village, KS. She also served as administrative case manager for nine Central City Schools in Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese.
