Wanda Blaser Bonnel, RN, PhD, GNP-BC, ANEF, as a specialist in geriatrics and nursing education, teaches courses in KU's masters, DNP, and PhD programs. As a Fellow in the National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education, Dr. Bonnel's scholarship has contributed to educational best practices. Multiple funded studies specific to online learning and feedback to students have been completed. Her evaluative research includes funded training projects with HRSA Division of Nursing grants emphasizing online learning for clinicians and nurse educators. She has been funded as the project investigator for the HRSA Division of Nursing grant, "Blended Nurse Educator Specialty & Clinical APN Masters." Under this grant, she and colleagues developed and implemented a Nurse Educator Certificate Program that received a Sigma Theta Tau Regional Pinnacle Award for Computer-Based Professional Education Technology. Additional grant funds were acquired to extend this program to the current Health Professions Educator Certificate. She additionally received funding to assist nurses advance on an educational career ladder using E-mentoring and online coursework.
Dr. Bonnel recently co-authored the textbook, "Teaching Technologies in Nursing and the Health Professions, Beyond Simulation and Online Education." She has presented multiple educational sessions on her specialties in venues such as the National league for Nursing, the American Nursing Informatics Association, and the American Geriatric Society. Her work has been published in varied journals including the Journal of Professional Nursing and the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She served on the National League for Nursing Task Group on Educator Competencies and has completed funded educational research from the National League for Nursing specific to online course teaching strategies. Her ongoing research relates to online educational best practices.
Certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner, Dr. Bonnel additionally teaches clinical courses for the Adult-Gerontological Advanced Practice and DNP programs. Dr. Bonnel serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing and has served as reviewer for multiple journals. Integrating both educator and clinician specialties, Dr. Bonnel plays an integral role in preparing future health care professionals for the changing world of health care.
